The story behind the notched, debossed WWII dog tag. Note: genuine WWII notched tags are debossed and have a rolled edge all the way around, including the notch.
During the war two types of dog tag were used. The regular tag and a dog tag with a notch in the tag. The notch is an alignment notch
that made it possible for field medical units to use a small hand held paper imprinter called the Addressograph model 70,
to hold the tag and imprint the information from the tag onto the patients paperwork.
The model 70 had several shortcomings and was abandoned soon after it was adopted.
Remaining stocks of notched tags were used up, and regular tags were used from then on.
After the war some department stores used the idea for the first credit cards.
The U.S. military issued dog tags with both types of imprinting, embossed/raised and debossed/sunken, with a few variations in type face,
depending on the
machine used
. Identification tags up until recent history were printed with debossed text.
Left and right Variations
sometimes occurred when the clerk or soldier making tags loaded the machine with tags hole to the right or left,
rolled edge facing up or facing down.
